Mexico City Mexico Temple Facts

Original announcement: 3 April 1976

Groundbreaking: 25 November 1979    

Original dedication:  2 December 1983

Public open house: Monday, 20 October 2008, through Saturday, 8 November 2008. No tours on Sundays.

Cultural celebration: Saturday, 15 November 2008 

Rededication: Sunday, 16 November 2008 (two sessions)

Location: Avenida 510 #90 Colonia San Juan de Aragón, 0759 Mexico, D.F.  

Property size: 1.82 acres 

Building size: 35,551 square feet

Building height: 151 feet, not including statue of Moroni (the statue is 15.5 feet high)

Exterior: New exterior made of precast concrete identical to original exterior and inspired by ancient Mesoamerican architecture

Interior:  Upgrades of finish work, along with paintings, art-glass windows, and remodeled hallways, doors and floor

  • Floor and panels of granite from China and India
  • Fiberglass oxen in baptistry

The Mexico City temple was the first of 12 temples built in Mexico. Other temples are located in Ciudad Juárez, Colonia Juárez Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, Mérida, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Tampico, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Veracruz and Villahermosa.

The Mexico City temple district covers Mexico City, the state of Mexico and the states of Baja California Sur, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla, Querétaro and San Luis Potosí (approximately 264,000 Church members).
