Glossary of Terms
This glossary defines words used by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that might not be familiar to those who are not members.
Pearl of Great Price
A volume of Latter-day Saint scripture that includes writings of Abraham, Moses and Matthew as translated by Joseph Smith, as well as excerpts from the writings of Joseph Smith.
Plan of Salvation
The plan established by God prior to creation of the earth whereby His spirit children could have an opportunity to come to earth, advance in knowledge and experience and ultimately become more like Him.
Pre-existence
The state in which God’s spirit children lived prior to their coming to earth and receiving a mortal body. Church members believe that all persons who have ever lived on the earth are spirit children of God.
Priesthood
The power and authority of God delegated to man on earth. Worthy Latter-day Saint males are ordained to the priesthood by the laying on of hands and are thereafter said to “hold” the priesthood. The priesthood is divided into two levels or orders — the Aaronic Priesthood and the Melchizedek Priesthood. (See also: Authority)
Prophet
One designated by God to be His spokesperson and to be a teacher, revelator and witness of gospel truths. The president of the Church is a prophet, as are the apostles.
