Glossary of Terms
This glossary defines words used by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that might not be familiar to those who are not members.
Calling
An invitation to a member to accept an office or responsibility in the Church.
Celestial Kingdom
The kingdom of God; the highest glory attainable after living a life of faithfulness.
Celestial Marriage
Marriage performed in the temples of the Church for this life and for eternity. Celestial marriage, sometimes called “eternal marriage” or “temple marriage,” is considered to be the highest ordinance any member of the Church can receive. Couples who receive celestial marriage can continue as husband and wife in eternity.
Chapel
The room or hall in a Church meetinghouse used for congregational worship services. Church members gather for Sunday service in chapels, not temples.
Conference
A meeting held periodically to conduct the business of the Church, to confirm the appointment of officers and to instruct and encourage Church members. Conferences may be held at ward, stake, regional or global (general) levels. The Church conducts two general conferences annually, in April and October. These are for the benefit of the entire Church membership and are led by the First Presidency of the Church.
Confirmation
After baptism, persons are confirmed as members of the Church in the name of Jesus Christ through the laying on of hands by an authorized priesthood holder. As part of the ordinance, the “gift of the Holy Ghost” (the right of confirmed members to receive the influence of, or promptings from, the Holy Ghost) is bestowed.
Consecration
The voluntary dedication of one’s time, talents and resources for the establishment of the Lord’s work.
Covenant
A promise between God and a person or group of persons. Those who keep their portion of a covenant with God will, in due time, receive the fulfillment of promised blessings.
